STAR Books Begin

STAR (Students Together Are Responding) books are used to open up the conversation at home about friendship issues.

There are three books that will circulate throughout the school year. Jungle Bullies is the first book this year.

Word Work

We started our word work groups today!

Today's activity was called "Picture Dictionary". Students had to read and write the words and then illustrate to show the meaning of the word.

September Pep Rally

We had our first pep rally for the month of September. Congratulations to RM and PO for being great examples to all of us!

Editing

In Writing Workshop we will be using fancy RED pens to edit or "fix up" our Small Moments stories. Today we reread our stories to look for names to capitalize.

Apple Day!

We had a lot of fun learning about how apples are grown and picked. We also learned about American folk legend, Johnny Appleseed. We ended the day by sampling some apple treats!

READING HOMEWORK
Starting this week you will see a written reader response (aka book report).  There are 4 choices for now.  As the year goes on I will add more choices.  Your child needs to just pick ONE question from the choices.  The writing should be done on the back page which has lines.  I typed the alphabet across the bottom of the sheet to help make sure all letters are in the correct position.

HOMEWORK
Homework begins this week!  I can fill you in on details at next week’s Open House.  Please encourage and support your child by helping them set up a routine, have supplies nearby, and reminding them to put their completed work in their folders.  Bringing home, completing the assignment, and returning it is a first step in building responsibility.
*Reading: Your child will bring home a red book pouch.  They can read their “just right” books from the pouch, library books, or favorites from home.
*Written Homework:  Monday through Thursday there will be 1 piece of written homework.  I will rotate math, reading, and writing.

ACADEMICS
*Math Workshop: We have started using our math books and are exploring number concepts.
*Reading Workshop: Our first unit of study is “Launching Reading Workshop”.  We have started book shopping for just right books, have written some short ‘book reports’, and are learning the routines of first grade workshop.
*Writing Workshop:  We are starting a narrative writing unit called “Small Moments”.  During this unit we will work on developing planning skills, sentence structure, and composing a story that has a beginning, middle, and end.

Math Partner Work

Today we practiced working with a partner. Pairs of partners used clipboards to take "inventory" of some classroom materials.
