ACADEMIC
UPDATE
*Math
Workshop: We continue to
work on our second unit which is on Geometry.
*Word
Work: Each week we add 5 words to our
class word wall. These are our “no
excuse” words which should be spelled correctly in our daily writing. We find and highlight the words in our
dictionaries as an extra reminder.
*Writing
Workshop: We will spend this week and next week
finishing up our All About chapter books.
These are non-fiction books on topics we are experts in.

Halloween
Just a reminder that your child can wear their costume to school on Friday. Please remember to leave the scary or dangerous (masks, weapons, etc) parts at home.
Third Grade Buddies
Mrs. Newkirk's third graders came to our class this morning. We made a ghost treat and then enjoyed hearing the third graders read some Halloween books.
Thank You!
Thank you for the Book Fair donations! We have many new books for different levels and holidays and author studies.

ACADEMIC
UPDATES
*Reading Workshop: We spent the last two
weeks learning some “tricky word” strategies.
Ask your child to show you these strategies:
-Eagle Eyes (look at picture for
clues)
-Lips the Fish (get your lips ready to
make the beginning sound)
-Stretchy Snake (stretch out the word)
-Chunky Monkey (are there any chunks
you know? Ex: candle)
-Flippy Dolphin (try both short and
vowel sounds)
-Skippy Frog (skip the word and read
the rest of the sentence to look for clues)
-Trying Lion (try, try again…use all
the above strategies)
-Helpful Kangaroo (if nothing is
working, ask someone else!)
*Writing Workshop: We continue to write
“All About” books. This week we will try
adding some special features to our books like a table of contents, diagrams,
and labels and captions.

Peas & Carrots
Today in math we solved word problems that have more than one solution. This was a BIG challenge. We used many strategies such as:
Counting on
Making a chart
Use objects to act it out
Draw a picture
Write numbers

Field Trip Letter
(This is a copy of the letter that was sent home with your child)
October 13, 2015
Dear
First Grade Parents,
On
Monday, November 23rd, all first grade classes will be going to a special
performance at the Quick Center for the Arts at Fairfield University. We will be attending a play based on the
classic Dr. Seuss Cat in the Hat story.
This is a great opportunity for our first graders to see literature
brought to life!
We
will travel by bus, leaving Ox Ridge School at 11:15 for the noon performance.
We will eat lunch in our classrooms before the trip. All children should bring lunch on this day.
We will not be going to the cafeteria.
Students will have a snack when we return to school after the play.
Tickets
to the show are paid for from the PTO Enrichment Fund. The charge for transportation is $7, due by
next Tuesday, October 20th. If you
are paying cash, please send it in an envelope with your child’s name written
on the outside. If you are paying by
check, please make it out to “Ox Ridge Activity Account”.
Each class is able to take two chaperones.
Your child’s teacher will arrange for the chaperones.
Sincerely,
The
First Grade Team

Problem Solvers
We started working on solving word problems. This week our goal was to write a great solution with 3 parts: picture, numbers, and words.
Mystery Reader
We had our first Mystery Readers today! QC was happily surprised when her mom, grandfather, and grandmother came dressed as a witch!
Labels:
Mystery Reader
Roll and Record
We used dice to practice our mental math. Our strategy is to "lock" the larger number in our heads and then "count on".
